H!B visa issues

I have H1B visa expired in my passport and my H1B status is valid until Dec'07. I have applied for 3 yrs extension which I am expecting to receive in late Nov. I am planning to visit India in Dec and get stamping done.

1) Can I take the appointment using current H1B and later take new H1B for stamping (both H1B will be valid at that time)?

2) How much time is it taking these days for getting H1B approval in California under normal processing?

I woul wait for the receipt notice of the new H-1B petition, and will take an appointment at the most 10 days in advance from the start date. For processing timeframe please see here.
