H-1b for residency pending and start date july 2nd

Hello, My H-1b for residency is still pending and my program start date is July 2nd. I have applied for premium processing last week and am hopeful it will come through by the end of next week (which will also be 15 calender days). What is my strategy if I do not get H-1b approval? Can I attend orientation? Can I work without pay? Will they wait for me to get my H-1b approve? I am avoiding bringing this subject up with my program director/GME office because I dont want to have a bad first impression with the program. Is there anything anybody else has done in my situation would be helpful.

You may not be able to go forward without your H1 approval

Most of the programs need to see your H1 approval before you can go for the orientation due to potential legal problems.
