H-1B ext. (8th Year) passport expiring

My 7th Year H-1B will be expiring in June 2007. I am planning to apply for extension in some time feb/march.
My 10 year India passport will be expiring in August 2007.
Do I need a valid passport when H-1 is applied or issued?
When should I apply for my passport renewal? (I'll apply in Chicago)

Any help is welcome.
