H-1 through a different employer while PERM is pending

I'm in my 6th year of H-1 and have a PERM application filed (before end of my 5th year) through a different employer to begin work with them in July 2010 (technically 8th year of H-1). For my 7th year of H-1, can my current empolyer file for a H-1 extension?
Any thoughts
