H-1 layoff. How much time do I have?

Hi - my company laid me off last week and have given me a month's time before they inform the INS.

My questions are:

1. How much time do I have, after that one month period, to leave the country?

2. I recently heard that the INS has become a little more flexible on that account. Is that true?

3. Any other suggestions/recommendations are welcome.

try to file another visa petition..for B1/B2/F1/H4 as soon as possible. The INS has now become stricter than ever on such status issues.

How do I go about obtaining a visitor visa? Just go to a local INS office?
