I'm US Citizen and planning a Sponsor my Mom who is an Indian Citizen. My Mom is currently here in US on visiting visa. If you have recently or in the past sponsored GC for parents, can you please share your experiences, paperwork collected and pass on any information that you think I should know. Based on my initial research, here are some of my questions:

1) My Mom entered US on June 2nd as Visitor's Visa. Is there a wait period from the date of entry to apply for GC? I was told that I should wait for 60 days before starting the process but I havent found any information online.

2) If all the documents are in place, what is the standard average processing time?

3) Can she travel outside USA like Canada, Mexico etc while application is in process?

Appreciate any help on this matter!

Thanks
Mangesh

1) It's safer to wait a little bit before you start the process. But I know a lot of people didn't wait and submitted the application soon after their parents arrived with visitor visa. And all of them go GC approval.

2) Expect 3 - 6 months.

3) When you submit the application, also include application for Advanced Parole. Once the AP is approved, she can travel outside of USA as long as AP is valid (normally 1 year).

I filed my mother's Green Card application 3 months after she arrived in the US.

1. It is advisable to apply 90 days after her arrival

2. Here is the processing timeline in Detroit (took 7 months for my mother)

Mother Arrived: July 17th, 2008
Medical Exam: October 25th, 2008
Mailed Application (I-130, I-485, I-131): November 9th, 2008
Receipt Notices Arrived: November 25th, 2008
Finger Printing: December 12th, 2008
Advance Parole Approved: March 7th, 2009
Interview Date: June 15th, 2009 (in Detroit)
Green Card Approval Notice Received: June 22nd, 2009

She is waiting for her Card to arrive. (Usually takes 3 weeks as the officer told me)

3. Yes. She can travel outside using Advance Parole. (But my mother did not travel out of the US though)

Medicals for GC

I'm thinking of getting Medicals done for my Mother as part of GC process. Is there preferred list of Doctors for immigration? Do they accept insurance?

Thanks
Mangesh

There is a panel of approved USCIS medics. I would be pleasantly surprised if an immigration related medical exam is covered by any insurance plan.

Help with GC application Forms

We are in the process of completing the applications for my Mother's GC and thinking of sending all the required forms (I-130, I-485, I-864,I-693, G-325A, I-765, I-131) at once. We are stuck with "A-number" and "Class of Admission" fields in I131. I highly apprecite your feedback on these following questions:

1. What do we need to provide for A-number?
2. Class of admission in I131? Is it IR5 -Parents of Adult US Citizens, new arrivals or IR0 - Parents of Adult US Citizens, adjustments?

Thanks in advance
Mangesh

If this is the first time that you are applying for GC, then leave the space blank or write NONE. In short, if you never ever applied for your mum's immigration benefit before, then you just need to leave the space blank because USCIS will assign her a Alien number which is what the A stands for.

The I-131 is an advance parole application if my memory serves me correct. If your mother is an overstayer of a previous visa, I would discourage you from applying for a travel document for her, let her wait till she has the GC in hand before travel. You just need to write in the type of visa she came on. It was it to officiate the cock fighting business in Alabama, then write the visa type, which is cockcoke champiosnhips...

No health insurance covers immigration related stuff, unless the insurance company is in the charity business...:)
