Greencard Confusion

I have a query, if anyone has any idea.. If someone was in the US but their visa had expired, and that person recently had a child who was born here, and the father is an american citizen, theyre wanting to get married theyre just not sure when as theyre saving money first. Seens she is the mother of an american citizen, even tho the child is an infant.. how could she go about getting her greencard so she can stay here, and not have to take their child away from the father. Any information would be helpful, Thanks.

Marry the father, or another US citizen. The child cannot sponsor the mother until it turns 21.
