hello everyone

looking for some advice and experience here

i have had a greeen card for over 9 yrs now and is due to expire in oct 2011. i have relocated overseas for work purposes and have been issued a re-entry permit.

questions are

- do i need to renew my green card or is the re-entr permit suffice to enter back?
- if i submit green card renewal, what address would i use for the forms, appt, etc? I have a perm address in the US where all my regular correspondence goes and thats the address on file with INS
- is there anyeway to get the biometrics done overseas at an US embassy?

thanks in advance

You can use the reentry permit to return to the US, even if the GC is expired. But don't show the airlines the expired GC, as some may give you a problem. Only show your passport and the unexpired reentry permit when checking in for the flight.

When you apply for GC renewal, list your US address. You can't get biometrics done overseas.

Renewing your Green Card will prove to be useful in your future. For now, you can re enter using your re-entry permit. You can only file your applications overseas, biometrics cannot be done overseas.Regarding your address, mention your US Address since it is maintained in all your records.

IF you are working abroad for a U.S. employer, did you explore the form N-470? IF you are working for a U.S. employer AND had at least one solid year inside the U.S. as a green card holder before going abroad for work AND have not yet been gone for a solid year yet, it would still be an option. Find it and read about it on www.uscis.gov

Yes Form N-470 should be used in case you want to preserve your residence for naturalization purposes though you do not stay in US. You are eligible to apply this form only if you are a green card holder for at least a year. Good luck!
