hello all,
my green card is valid until 2015 and wanted to find out couple of things:
- how much time does the renewal of gc take?
- is it easy process or go through hoops?
- when should i start the renewal process, is it too early?

now regarding citizenship
- do we have list of documents needed to file for citizenship?
- is it easy process or do i need to get a immigration lawyer to do that?

thanks in advance, you guys have been very helpful in past.

You are likely NOT dealing with any "conditional status". You likely got your status in 2005 and as such are probably eligible to file an N-400 now. UNLESS you have criminal or other serious issue preventing naturalization, what are you waiting for? I have seen folks report processing times of 3 to 6 months from filing to Oath all around the country.

You apply for card renewal (if needed at all) 90 days before the expiration date. After you natz, you no longer have a greencard anymore.

Another consideration is when an LPR child has a parent naturalize before they turn 18 and usually also become a citizen automatically.

Read the Guide To Naturalization, and the N-400 form and instructions.

If you don't have complications like a criminal record or applying for citizenship based on an obscure provision of the law, you shouldn't need a lawyer to complete the citizenship process.

You will need your green card, list of all your trips out of the US ( even one day trips to Canada), your ties in the US most importantly for filing your citizenship application. This process is simple and if you go through the Guide to Naturalization or browse through similar topics on the net, you will get a clear idea. This is to point out that you need not go in for attorney if your application does not have any complicated situations.

There is no fixed time for getting the citizenship process completed. It depends on the completeness of your application, USCIS center that you are filing in your application etc. Generally it can take 3 - 5 months, if your case is a very simple one with no complications.
