Green Card Question - From Australian

Upgraded

Registered Users (C)
I posted this in the wrong forum originally and got some slightly confusing Answers, So I figured I'd post here.

Hi Everyone,

I'm new here to the forums, I hope I'm posting the right section. If not please forgive me.
I'm an Australian Citizen, Currently 19 and completing my HSC ( Year 12 ) Soley for the purpose of winning my Green card in the DV lottery.

Anyways I have some questions..

1) How soon after winning the lottery are you required to go for the interview? See I wrote I had completed year 12, although I'm doing it as we speak, It will be officially completed November 1st 2007, If I win the GC Interview can I delay the Interview untill December 2007 or Janurary 2008? ( So I have my Certificate )

2) I entered the lotto as an individual, My Dad also entered as in individual however since I'm an unmarried son under 21 I was also put on the form with my brothers, That's all legal right? I have only entered once although if he wins I also have access to a green card app to move over with him?

3) If I dont win my Greencard is there any other option to move to the US by either starting a business there or something? I doubt I'll marry an American Lady any time soon and the field of work I'm in Ie Martial Arts instructor is definatly not going to warrant me a GC.. Is there some kind of loop hole or something I can do now to get over there even if I dont win the GC?

4) How much money do I need to have saved up, When they ask me how I'll be supporting myself I dont just want to say ' I'll save up some money now '.

Thanks

On top of those Questions I've been told that If I dont have my Year 12 Diploma and I win just not to send the forms in, However I dont want to miss out.

Can I mail my forms in late, or do they HAVE to be sent in by a certain date, rather if I win my Greencard can I say fill out the application and send it in December rather than June or Whatever it might be?

I already explained to you - you cannot send the forms in unless you qualify for DV lottery - that is, you have a HS diploma or experience. So, you can do it in November-December 2007 if you win.

the deadline for sending the forms and actually getting the visa is September 2008.

Fantastic, I'm glad there's a later deadline. That's all the info I was after :)
Thanks again!

I Did understand your original Pm but was a bit confused about the whole process. Sounds like there's alot of paperwork :D

I know this is kind of jumping the gun but if possible can someone answer..

I cant remember if it's $30 000 or $40 000 you need in savings before you go?

about $9,000 should be sufficient for one person, and $12,000 for two.

And it's not just the savings. If you have a good profession (and apparently, you already speak English), good skills, education, job offer, affidavit of support or property that can be sold, - any combination of the above is enough to show that you will not become a public charge.

Bump!

What happens if you dont have enough funds?

Basically How hard is it for them to cancel you going over? If you meet all the requirements job wise, identity wise ect but dont have the funds what happens?

Hello. I did AOS so my understanding of CP is limited. However, in all cases, you only get the green card if you can prove that you will not need public assistance for the next 3 years or so. The easiest way to do that is to have sufficient savings (approximately 3x poverty limit). There are other ways to prove this, but ultimately, you will need to convince the people interviewing you that you aren't going to be a liability.

As for entering the US under other means, it's a very, very long shot but I thought I should mention that my martial arts teacher was granted entry due to his experience. Of course, he was nationally ranked in China, which is essentially a world-level ranking. Anyway, he came in under O (Outstanding Ability, given to Olympic medalists, very famous scientists, etc.), switched over to the dual-intent H1B visa, and eventually got his green card under EB1 (Extraordinary Ability).

Good luck to all.

Ah Guys I have to tell ya, I am so scared.
The fact my entire future is based on winning this green card or not, the fact I have to wait and stall, till after I've completed my year 12 diploma ( which could be December of this year ).
Even If I win It's going to be such a tight rope I'm going to have to walk here..

So If im not mistaken if I win I do the following..

1) Ignore the letter till December? ( Even if I recieve it in April )

2 Go from there.

Hello. Just to clarify, are you a DV2007 winner or are you hoping to win DV2008? I had thought you were already picked but if you are waiting until Dec, you aren't going to make the Sep 2007 deadline for DV2007. If you are a DV2007 winner, you must be ready for your interview no later than September (and even that would be late and rather risky).

If you have not yet gotten a letter, it's good to be hopeful about a future win. (Re-reading your posts, I guess you are a hopeful, not yet a winner.) I participated in the lottery for more than 10 years and finally won DV2006. However, please don't base your plans on the assumption that you will win. As many people say on this forum, hope for the best but prepare for the worst.

Good luck to all.

You entered November 06, right? (your message says "November 07", which is later this year) I haven't focused on DV since I won DV2006, but I'm assuming that DV2008 will be like previous years. If so, winners should be notified between April and July or so. Living in the US on H1B, I received my notification letter for DV2006 in early May 2005.

Some unsolicited advice: stay hopeful regarding the DV lottery, but don't plan your life around something so inherently random and unlikely. Good luck to all.

Upgraded,

Researcher29 offers very good advice. I had a very similar experience, winning DV2007 after 8 years of trying. I was also on H1-B at the time but I chose CP instead of AOS.

I do hope you win next year, but if you don't -- what's so bad about living in Australia?

Best of Luck!

Alright , Thanks for the advice, I think I've got all the info I need :)

If I dont win the Lotto I'm going to get a temporary visa and just keep on keepin on.

I really hate Australia though and would warn anyone against moving here, It's hot, boring and the people have the lowest I.Q in the world according to a recent survey.
Just my point of view :)
