My name currently on my green card is as follows
First name: AA
Last Name: CC DD
Middle Name: BB (Not on green card)

All my previous US visas also display my name as on my green card (H1b and F1). Since my passport is expiring I m applying for a renewal wherein I plan to correct my name as follows
First Name: AA
Last Name: DD
Middle Name: BB CC ( part of given name in indian passport)

What process do I need to follow to update my last name on my green card? what documents do I need to get this name change processed. Also I would like to know how to get my US spouse's last name changed from CC DD to DD.

Any help or comments will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

File form I-90 to get an updated green card. It should be accompanied by proof of your correct names, which would be your birth certificates*, plus your marriage certificate for your wife if she took your last name.

*unless you changed your name via another legal action, in which case you need a document from that legal process as proof of your new name.

Thanks a lot for your reply Jackolantern

Does that mean I have to get a new birth certificate as well? I m getting my name corrected on my passport, would that not be sufficient proof of name change?

Issue is that my birth certificate only has abbreviated name - B.C. AA
I m not dropping or adding any pieces to my name, just getting the last and middle name portions corrected with already existing name.

The name in your old and future passports are different from your birth certificate, and USCIS has your birth certificate on record. If they notice the discrepancy, that will probably cause them to ask for your birth certificate. When there is a discrepancy in name or date of birth, they treat the birth certificate as the "gold standard" unless there is another legal document (but not the passport) showing the name change. So you can try it with the passport alone, but it may be insufficient.

Or you could just get the passport renewed with your altered name as planned, and leave the green card alone until it's time for naturalization. Then if they won't give you the exact name you want on the naturalization certificate, you can get a free legal name change through the citizenship process to obtain the name you want. How long until you're eligible for citizenship?

Green card holder - name change after marriage

Hi,

I have an Indian passport and Green card through marriage. I want to change my middle name and last name to my husband's name and last name respectively.
I want to know in which order I need to change the name in the following documents?
1. Indian passport
2. Green card
3. SSN
4. Driver's license
5. Bank and other financial documents
Please reply in which documents should I change the middle and last name first and then documents required for name change in all these documents.

Thanks.
