Dear Forum readers,
I am a German citizen and live currently in Frankfurt/Germany. I have a boyfriend that comes from Australia and currently lives in Sydney. We have been together for 3 years now and have lived in Canada for a year. We have been thinking about moving to a country together and we both want to move to the USA at one point in our lives, but did not think that this opportunity would arise so soon. He just recently won the Green Card Lottery. He was asked to go to the consulate and sign his papers and now he has to immigrate into the US within the next 6 months. I really would like to be with him in the United States, but I have heard that if I marry him some day after he has gone to the US and has his green card, the waiting period can take up to 5 years.
This is a very long time to wait especially if we have a family one day. I know that it would be possible for me to marry him now and obtain a Green Card through him, but this came all very sudden and to rush a marriage within 6 months is nearly impossible especially since he lives currently in Sydney. We really do not know what to do at the moment, since on the one hand we want to be together but on the other the only way to do that seems to get married, which we did not intend at this point in our lives, since a marriage is also always connected to financial issues and i am only a University student at the moment.
So is there any other way that we could pursue, so that one day we can be together and have a life without having to wait 5 years?
And if the only way is to marry him now, would it be sufficient to show them the marriage certificate or would they want us to show a picture of our wedding and everything in order to show them that our relationship is sincere? Since preparing a wedding cannot be done in 6 months.
Thank you for your help.
