Green card holder-transferred to another country by employer

My family and I obtained green card in Jan 2005. Since August 2008 I have been transferred to Chile by my employer for a project. This project could last about 4 years. My family is still in uSA and I will be frequently visiting my family once in three months and will spend about 10 days during every visit. Please advise if I have to complete any formalities for this change. Also I want to apply for citizenship whenever the eligibiltyrules allow. I understand that we could apply for citizenship after about 41/2 years after obtaining a green card. Now that I am transferred to this project, will this affect the eligibility rules. What I should do to ensure that I will be able to make my citizenship application at the end of 4 1/2 yrs waiting period.

Thank you

You'll be in a lot of trouble if you don't file an N-470 and get it approved before you leave for Chile.

Normally you can apply 5 years minus 90 days after your green card is approved. But in your case, if you spend 4 years in Chile without an N-470, you will have to wait more than 4 years after you return permanently from Chile. And if you don't have a reentry permit, you risk losing your green card. Both the N-470 and Reentry permit must be applied for while you are in the US.

This is a serious situation. Make SURE you get N-470 before leaving USA.

Also later on for citizenship you may (will) be asked to prove intent of living in USA. Maintain all the possible connections to USA (bank account, driver license utility bill, tax transcripts). Ultimately you have to prove that this 4 year was temporary and you always intended to stay in USA.

4 years is a lot , please keep us posted on your development I have not read any such case where stay outside the US was this long. May be long term member of this forum have seens such cases???
