Green Card Holder Leaving the US.

Hello,

I was wondering if it's possible for a recently arrived (2weeks) DV winner to leave the US for 3 month and come back without having received the Green Card please?
Thank you very much for your help

At the very least, you need an I-551 stamp in the passport that is valid for the length of the trip. They are being stingy with the dates on the stamps lately, some report only one month validity. The actual cards are being produced relatively fast (as little as 7 to 10 days as reported by some folks, of course, some people run into delays...) It is safest to wait for the actual card.

Hello and thank you,

The I-551 stamp is the thing next to the visa saying that I am admitted right?
I cant read the stamps, I think it says Nove 9 2010 (I arrived the 5th). And the officer also hand wrote DVI 05 Nov 11 on the bottom.
What does that mean plz? Thank you

An I-551 stamp is temporary evidence of lawful permanent residence status (Legal Immigrant) in the U.S. Coupled with the picture ID function of your foreign passport it serves in place of a greencard until you get the real thing in the mail. Again, the cards are coming VERY FAST these days, you should wait for it.

You are looking at it and can't tell what is says? How is the Immigration Officer at the Port of Entry in the foreign country or upon your return to the U.S. going to be able to read it? Look closer. Does it say that your were admitted for lawful permanent residence? Does it show your correct entry date? Is there a clear expiration date?

Hello,

I have a Visa that says that i'm a permanent resident. It expires on APril 2011 but that not the officer that said that, it was already given when they stamped it.
OH I think I got it! THe officer told me it's valid for one year. SO I guess that's why the stamp shows DIV 05 Nov 11.
It means until November 2011 right ? That's the I-551?
Thanks a lot

The VISA that was put in your passport had an expiration date relating to making your IMMIGRANT RNTRY into the U.S.

When you entered the U.S., the CBP Officer stamped your passport with your initial IMMIGRANT ENTRY and gave you temporary evidence of status, in the form of an I-551 stamp. The temporay stamp has its own seperate expiration date of the temporary proof. NOTE: I-551 is the actual form number of a greencard.
