Green Card for my son.

I am an American citizen for about a year. My son is over 21. He entered and resides in USA illegally. Does he has to go back to Peru in order for me to sponsor him? Or He can get his green card without leaving the country?

did he enter on a visa and overstayed? or did he cross the border without inspection? In the first case, he will be able to get his GC inside the U.S. and in the second he won't.

If he doesn't marry, his wait for a gc will be about 5-6 years.
