Got the VISA, what is next

Hi All,

I have got the diversity visa last week from the embassy in Turkey with a validity of 6 months as well as a yellow envelope which includes my records and history. The lady told me that the procedures will proceed during the entry. My questions are;

- Does it matter where I enter the US?
- How long will the procedures take and are they all completed at the airport, or do they take me to somewhere else?
- What are these procedures?
- I do not plan to get a job in the near future in the US. Is it a problem?
- When and where do I receive the green card and does it have a validity on it?

Thanks and best,

Yavuz

1. No
2. Airport: 30 minutes.
3. Photographs, papers to sign for your entry... little administrative stuffs.
4. Not at all
5. a few month later, you will receive by mail the green card at your US address (the one you will give them after finding one).

Can you please give us a precise description of what happened between the time you returned papers (DSP-122 and DS-230) and your interview at the embassy. Let us know question you have been asked, your medical exam etc... Thanks for your help :) ;)

Fresh personal experience (my parents two months ago)

- How long will the procedures take and are they all completed at the airport, or do they take me to somewhere else?

2 hours, at the airport

- What are these procedures?

only fingerprinting and a signature

- When and where do I receive the green card and does it have a validity on it?

You will receive it anywhere from two weeks (my parents) to a year from the date of entry. It's valid for 10 yrs.

To Bobb and adesoji, sorry for my late answering. And thanks for the reply. That means it is less probable that I miss the connection !

After I have sent the forms, I received the appointment letter, my case number was EU-815, one of the first ones probably (I was not aware of this case number importance during the interview). Nobody called me, only the letters.

I have got the medical reports which require certain vaccanication, HIV and chest x-ray examinations. The report was closed in an envelope to be opened at the time of interview. It was asked from me to send the required documentation to the embassy prior to interview.

At the time of interview, my documents were already reviewed. I was asked some questions about my future plans, education, work experience etc. I work at the time being and sent them by account records, vehicle registrations, all forms of valuable record to prove that I am sponsor of myself. Then I waited for 10 minutes and was congragulated for my DV. All of this took 1/2 hour in the embassy. Next day I received my passport with the 6 month valid Immigrant Visa (DV-2005).

hi yaww

At the airport, unless there is a problem.

> - What are these procedures?

Entering your name into various computers, filling out paperwork.

> - I do not plan to get a job in the near future in the US. Is it a problem?

Yes. You will confirm many peoples prejudice that the DV program is an obsolete relic, brings freeloaders into the country and should be done away with.

There are plenty of jobs here. You seem to speak english, there is no excuse for not getting yourself a job.

You have been awarded the priviledge to come to the US without any of the hassles people usually have to go through. Use it !

You get a stamp in the passsport on arrival which functions as temporary green-card with 1 year validity. You will get the actual card between 60-180 days later in the mail. It will be valid for 10 years, however if you stay out of the country for more than 1 year it expires unless you apply for a re-entry permit beforehand.

Next step:
- pack up your possessions in turkey and put them into a storage container
- buy an airline ticket
- fly to the US
- GET A JOB
- buy a house
- ship your stuff

Another even fresher experience (2 weeks ago).
My husband won the lottery (EU~9***) and I was on his application. So we flew back in October to our country but were missing one document. So we went back for Christmas and got our stamps without any problem and a very simple interview (well, my husband and I have a full time job in the US under an H1b visa for the last 5 years so it was pretty easy to prove we could support ourselves).
We flew back in the US, got through immigration and here we are. We are just waiting on our actual green cards now.
Regarding your questions:

- Does it matter where I enter the US? No
- How long will the procedures take and are they all completed at the airport, or do they take me to somewhere else? About 30 min
- What are these procedures? A signature and one fingerprint
- I do not plan to get a job in the near future in the US. Is it a problem? Not really
- When and where do I receive the green card and does it have a validity on it? On the address you provided them with in the US.

Good luck, it is so easy compare to the employer sponsored program, you should feel very lucky!!!!
