Got Police Clearance from Chicago consulate

I got my PCC from Indian consulate in Chicago yesterday.
I applied on Dec 7 after AshishV told me the procedure.
They just need "passport clearance" from passport issuing authority in India, which was Mumbai for me. I don\'t think they actually contact local police.
Once I applied, I had my dad contact RPO in Mumbai. He told them my case number assigned by Chicago consulate and asked them to trace the fax.
The first time, they could not find it, so I had to request consulate to fax again.
Once the second fax was found, they checked my case (not sure what they do) and faxed it back to Chicago consulate. This happened on 12/20. However, Chicago consulate said they did not receive any fax. So my dad had to go back and request to fax one more time. This was not easy. Finally, they faxed on 12/26.
Chicago consulate first said they did not have the fax. But they suggested I talk to the consul. By the time I got the consulate, they had somehow found the fax. I paid the fees and asked me to collect the PCC in the afternoon.
I suggest that you have your folks follow up in India and ask the RPO in India to fax back the clearance. This is the easiest way. If they send by diplomatic pouch or packet, it may take a while before you get it.
I am posting my experience for everybody\'s benefit. This PCC thing is making us all lose sleep.
Good luck to all

PCC PRocedure

Thanks for posting your experience.

BTW, could you post the link where the procedure to get PCC is described.

Thanks a million!

Congrats--and questions

Hi MJ,

Was your passport issued before 1997?
i applied for pcc on 10th Dec
I am following the same procedure as you are. My father enquired at RPO in MUmbai but was told that they hvnt received the fax yet from SF consulate and asked them to fax again. They said they would but doesnt look like they will. Did chicago consulate charge you for faxing?
in RPO in mumbai how did u know that the fax wasnt received. does the fax come directly from Chicago? or thru some place else?

I just referred to the discussions on this board.

I don\'t know if there is one specific link, though immihelp.com has some info as well.
Thanks

Hi,
The fax was sent directly from Chicago to Mumbai RPO.
First time, they said it was not recd (though one cannot confirm if they actually recd it or not) so I requested Chicago office to fax again and they did. I found a person there who handles these cases. She agreed to fax again. They did not charge me extra fro faxing again, though if they had, I would have paid.
Get a hold of somebody in the consulate and keep in constant touch with them. That way, there will be more consistency.
Good luck

Do u pay extra for requesting them to fax it ?

In NY , i asked if there was anyway to speed the process and
they said "NO".
They asked me to call back after 1 month to check .

No Title

I did not pay anything extra. I am not sure if each consulate will expedite the process for you, but its worth a try.
As far as validity goes, if the Mumbai consulate will accept this certificate, do I care about its validity? I think not. I have email from the consulate saying that the PCC from Indian consulate is all I need as far as PCC is concerned.

Details are on Indian consulate web page

PCC is considered as Misc Service at Indian consulate.
Forms and details are on the websites of the consulates.

eg. For NY consulate www.indiacgny.org

If you have passport renewed from the same consulate,
they give PCC the same day. Otherwise they say 30-45 days.
