I got my PCC from Indian consulate in Chicago yesterday.
I applied on Dec 7 after AshishV told me the procedure.
They just need "passport clearance" from passport issuing authority in India, which was Mumbai for me. I don\'t think they actually contact local police.
Once I applied, I had my dad contact RPO in Mumbai. He told them my case number assigned by Chicago consulate and asked them to trace the fax.
The first time, they could not find it, so I had to request consulate to fax again.
Once the second fax was found, they checked my case (not sure what they do) and faxed it back to Chicago consulate. This happened on 12/20. However, Chicago consulate said they did not receive any fax. So my dad had to go back and request to fax one more time. This was not easy. Finally, they faxed on 12/26.
Chicago consulate first said they did not have the fax. But they suggested I talk to the consul. By the time I got the consulate, they had somehow found the fax. I paid the fees and asked me to collect the PCC in the afternoon.
I suggest that you have your folks follow up in India and ask the RPO in India to fax back the clearance. This is the easiest way. If they send by diplomatic pouch or packet, it may take a while before you get it.
I am posting my experience for everybody\'s benefit. This PCC thing is making us all lose sleep.
Good luck to all
