I am ready to file my N400 application and as I am reading through it for the 10th time, one of questions raised serious doubts.

Part 10. D Good Moral Character,

Question 16. Have you ever been arrested, cited or detained by any lay enforcement office (INCLUDING USCIS or former INS and military officers for any reason?

Here is the story, back in I think 2006, we were flying with my family from Florida to our hometown and as I was returning the rental car I grabbed a bag with oranges that my wife wanted to take to the plane. I put it in my backpack. We get to the airport and as we are coming through security, a knife appears on the screen. It was at the bottom of the bag with oranges, in my backpack. The USCIS agent took my name, asked me why did I bring this into the plane (I felt really stupid), where was my address, my status in the US (I was a green card holder but I did not have it with me) etc, etc, etc. He filled out some paper of the event and let me go and told me to be careful. That was the end of it.

My question is: Should I write a YES in question 16 and explain the event? Is this considered detention or cited by a USCIS agent?

Thank you,

Daniel

I presume you were traveling local (within US) since you did not have your GC with you. I also presume you did not get a copy of the report the security agent filled out.
#1. It was unlikely to be a USCIS agent.
#2. If they just filled some paperwork, but did not even give you a copy ... you were NOT detained, questioned or cited by anyone.

Thank you.
You are right. I was travelling within the US. And now that you mention it, it was not USCIS but TSA.
I was given no copy of the report.
