Going to DV visa interview without proof of sufficient funds...

I am not a lawyer and following is not legal advice of any sort. However:

It appears that some DV winners think that proof of funds is not required at the time of the interview. Per DV guidelines, proof of funds at a minimum poverty line IS required. At interview, one may or may not be asked to provide bank statements showing sufficient funds that are equal to or higher than minimum poverty guideline. (see this link)

What if you don't have sufficient funds?

If one is asked but cannot produce evidence of sufficient funds and if one's DV application is denied then he/she permanently remains on file as having expressed clear intent to immigrate to the US. This may (but doesn't have to) be taken into consideration if one would like to visit US in the future (visitor, travel, study...etc). In essence, one's visitor's (or student's) visa could be denied on grounds on previously unsuccessful DV application, since DV application constitutes immigrant intent and visitor's visa should not be used to enter and stay indefinitely in the US.

Bottom line: I would not go to an interview if I were not absolutely prepared and have all documents required for the interview. The requirements for DV are so simple (but strict) that each person can very easily determine whether or not they will get the visa.

Nevertheless, every person decides on their own whether or not to pursue DV application, at their own risk.
Thank you for sharing. In case if they dont have sufficient fund, Can they find a sponsor for them right ?

Proof of Funds

I received my interview appointment letter with a page 2 showing all the documents that I need to take with me.

It shows that I must take PROOF that I will not be a public charge by way of "Proof of Funds" AND "Employment Verification" etc. I dont have it with me to quote word to word but I think it is required (or Affidavit of support? I remember?). Also when filling the I485, I remember vaguely a question asking about having been or being a public charge.

I plan to take my whole house IN CASE they ask for pilau masala, in place of Biryani masala; or goat curry when I only got chicken curry. I will take all the documents in all honestly of good, bad, and the ugly - then leave the rest to the Lord.

Please somebody with current interview experience from Nigeria,Ghana, kenya and others should throw more light into this issue.

Thanks.

It seems to vary depending on where the interview takes place. You appear to be doing an AOS, from what I've read asking for proof of funds and current employment is standard as the DoS is interested in your current domestic situation.
Some people who go the CP route are asked for both proof of funds and an I-134 Affidavit of Support, others, even when volunteering one or both documents are told by the CO it is not required or necessary.

It’s a lottery within a lottery.

Wow!

Wow! Both? That might only happen at CPO...am AoS n yet to find out what they are asking.

it seems pretty simple to me

If you have one or more of following then I think the chances of being asked for proof of funds is very low:
(1) Citizenship or permanent residency in 1st world country
(2) Higher education qualifications - degree, masters, phd
(3) Current good well paying job.

Also, if you already have a job offer then obviously there is no need to ask for proof of funds from you.

Hence, I would guess that most US consulates in 1st world countries will not ask for proof of funds, but some consulates in 2nd and 3rd world countries may ask for it especially if you're not highly educated. This should be obvious, I think.
