Going to Canada

Dear friends, is a valid green card enough in order to be able to go to Canada and come back via air or one needs a valid passport/reentry permit? I need any inputs.

As long as you go to Canada directly from the United States the green card is the only document you need. This applies both in terms of getting into Canada and returning to the United States.

A passport/RP is needed if you fly to Canada from say England.

You should send an email to the Canadian embassy or consulate asking this question. You will get in a few hours a form reply stating their policy. Carry that reply email when you travel for your peace of mind.

A new rule recently went into effect requiring American citizens to have passports to return to the United States. However that rule does NOT apply to green card holders.

Feel free to ask me any further questions (I came back from Toronto two week ends ago).

Thanks a lot thankful. I was reviewing the laws and everything was about US Citizens and quite confusing. You clarified this for me. Thank you very much.

The new law did not change anything with respect to green card holders. Citizens could enter the United States from Canada using a photo ID and a birth certificate. Congress ended that and requires now them to present passports.

Have a good trip.

I can confirm from personal experiences that if you are a LPR no passport is needed. It makes no difference that you enter via air, land or water.
