going to Canada

What 14Ksusha has been saying is just baloney. I fly from Cali to Vancouver at least every month. A green card is all you need for BOTH Canadian and the US border inspectors. Only once did the Canadians ask where is your passport sir and I said I flew from the States and am not carrying a travel document. The officer then verified from the computer where I flew in and allowed me to enter Canada.

Retuning to the States is even easier. They scan your green card and ask two or three routine questions.

Your little green card is a billion times more valuable than your crappy national passport. And yes your green card alone will lead you back into the United States.
