Going to Canada

You will need a Visa/work status to work in Canada and get paid...US GC has no bearing..

If you are training staff and do not get paid in Canada you are OK.

Thank you very much everyone for your comments. This site and all of you are helpful as ever. I had someone call the canadian embassy, and as per her I-151, I-551 kind of GC (whatever that means), does not need a Visa, else I need a visa. I guess I'll go home tonight and check.

LinuxRox, Phoenix - do tell me about the chicks though :P. That is one info I can't get from people at work. (But dude you should see the chicks on east coast - way better than CA).

gcskr, I got the document - it is VERY useful, thanks a WHOLE BUNCH. I haven't had time to read it yet, but I will keep it in safe keeping and read it when I can. If and when I get time, I might even attach it to this website as a message post in the appropriate forum as pointed by you. Thank you very much for painstakingly splitting it in 5 peices so it could get to me.

wonderfull - I am going there for a few boring meetings, and won't be working over there. I should be back fairly soon, so I should be okay.

ECGC - 140 - Fact (And do consider this for a moment): I am really too busy. Though I feel no ill towards you, and hope you will understand and maybe even appreciate my ignoring your childish comments. Even if I wanted to give this any attention, I really couldn't - because I am really just too damned busy to even care. Also, there are a few people on this forum who know me in person, and they will vouch for the truthfullness of whatever I have said - not that they need to or should anyway.

It is really difficult to try and make you see my point of view, ..... But I just have to move on and bow out of this self elating bashing you guys are so addicted to.

LOL :) Din't know anyone read that, thought I deleted it fast enough. The reason I changed it was because I din't want this situation to get out of hand. I wasn't looking to pick a fight.

I have butted heads with SillyMan before over similar/other issues before and have a low opinion of his ability to look beyond his ego and understand differing points of view. So din't want to waste my breath.

In my opinion this is a great forum and needs to be kept that way. The "keeping" requires effort, dedication, motivation and fairness. Otherwise the forum will degenerate faster than you can say JLo. It is just unfortunate that the people responsible are not very responsible and so this saga continues, and not wanting to give this thread any importance, won't be coming back here again.

Regards!

140's response obviates the need for my response.
timesa,
I agree with you that 140 should not have edited his response (i read it too). I take responsibility for what i said and stand by it.I see no need to edit anything I said.

Disclaimer:I don't have any ill feelings either!!

PS: How can you claim that a document is VERY USEFUL without reading it? If u wanna sincerely thank someone for sending a useful information won't you read it first?gcskr take note:D :D

I am typing this from a hotel in canada .. one information that u guys might find useful, the lady who let me into the plane from denver (to canada), checked my green card and told me that if I am gonna be in canada for > 30 days then she needs to keep my green card with her.

Also, citizens get their boarding pass easily thru self checkin, but gc holders need to talk to a real person who verifies documents before giving a boarding pass.

Anyway, I am returning back to america tommorow, will let u know if I run into anything funky.

If you left your GC with the lady at the port of exit, how will you get it back? Did she explain the procedure?Won't you need that at the port of entry? Can you leave a copy of your GC and not the original?

I don't believe that bit about having to leave GC behind with anyone EVER! I have heard of cases where they take the GC away from you AFTER you enter the US, but on departure never. The official was probably smoking something, or SillyMan misunderstood her. I just tried to run a search on this, couldn't find any other mention of this fact.

I didn't believe it either. But I thought we'll give Sillyman the benefit of doubt and hear his explanation first before reaching conclusions.

Back home - without luggage - cuz of missed flights, bad weather blah blah.

Anyway. GC holders - no need for picture etc. at US visit. The lady did verify my GC thru a computerized system, and asked me questions to verify who the heck I was .. no cellphones allowed strictly. Lotsa cops there, I wouldn't mess around there in any respect.

To answer ur Q, the ditz who checked my GC before letting me on the plane to canada .. here is how it went.

Silly man in the boarding line
Lady: Can I see ur ID?
Silly: Yeah sure - do u wanna see passsport/green card?
Lady: No .. Drivers License
Silly: Here it is.
Lady: Fine go ahead

(Silly goes sits in the plane .. pulls his laptop out .. is on the phone with someone .. lady comes in yelling ..)
Lady: HEY MISTER I NEED TO TALK TO U
Silly (still on phone): sure what di u want
Lady: I need to check ur green card
Silly: Ok here it is

(Lady grabs it runs away)
(Silly runs after her yelling .. damn u can't take that away .. along with my passport)

Lady stops

Lady: I thought green card was GREEN, what is this
Silly: It is not green, call someone who has a clue and ask, u wanna see a PERMANENT RESIDENT CARD.

Lady: Oh I have to keep it
Silly: BULLSHIT, you can't keep it

(Lady calls big ditz on phone)
Lady: I have to keep it if ur gonna be in canada > 30 days .. ru gonna be?
Silly: Nope, I am coming back in 4 days
Lady: Ok fine .. but I still feel the card shud've been green.
Silly: (Deep sigh .. goes sits in the plane).

..

Official was definitely smoking something! She was probably Canadian immigration and not US. For US/Canada, the immigrations are always on the wrong end. Hence she had no bloody clue what the green card looks like.

If an American IIO could not identify the green card then god help us! :(

Silly,

You need to complain officially and seriously to the Airline. I assummed the lady is an employee of Airline. Who gave her authority to keep passenger's ID? The consequence would be scary.
Seems driver license is enough at most times, don't mention green card at all. Thanks for the experience.

WITAAA,

You are right, the airline was United and I am pissed off at them anyway since they gave me a good run around getting a boarding pass even - simply because they failed to check my gc.
