Give up GC and reapply thru family sponsor

Hi, I have a very unique situation. My friend had his GC thru his mom when he was under 21. Since he cannot stay in US for more than 6 months a year, and we all think his GC is going to be revoked if the immigration officer find out he had stayed outside of country for too long, so he has not returned to US for several years to keep his GC.

Now he is married, his mom wants to bring his wife and him back into US with GC, than means will apply on his behalf thru relative category again. Does he needs to go thru any process to formally give up his GC? or his mom can go ahead to apply for him and his wife?

Thank a lot in advance!

he probably lost it a long time ago anyway, since he didn't return to the States.

if his mom is a citizen, then - yes, she can. However, it will take him and his wife 8 years to get their visas based on their relationship to mom (13 if they are from Mexico, and 17 if they are from the Philippines).
