getting TN and comming back to do move

Hi guys!

Hoping to go and get TN next week. However, I have to come back the same day to give the movers a copy of my TN so they can pass my possessions through the border on July 24. They are doing the loading on the 23th and requested a copy of the TN before comming to do the loading. The moving company will not even come to my place to pack and load on July 23 without me faxing them the copy of the TN visa before hand (?). Not sure what to do.

Can I go, get my TN and come back, deal with the movers and then take a plane and go? The other thing is that my start date is August 16 but the moving company needs at least 15 days for delivery so I have to do the moving thing in advance.

Please advice

It is unlikley that POE will give you a TN which such a dstant statrting date.

You should ask your company to remove the staring date from the letter, and arrange a telecon with them after you get TN. This will allow you to say that you are going down to 'work' immediately. This will get you your TN (with a July xx 2008 expiry) and you can give this to your movers.

You are then free to go down and work whenver yo uand your firm decided. The TN start date and the work start date are not tied together, so there is no worry about this. By the way, we ALL used to get outr TNs early, for this reason, and to allow for quitting old job, but POEs have made this harder over the years. Now, the "I'm going to work today" requirement, which is silly, is gotten around by arranging a 'work meeting' as I indicated.

thank you so much Nelsona. I can't get the date changed at this time since everyone is on vacation. I hope the POE will understand that I need this TN in advanced for all the moving related stuff I have to do.

thanks a bunch again.

You'd better have a plan B. I hope you have contact numbers for someone in authority at your new employer. Even in the olden days, getting a TN a month in advance was unlikely. Now it will be a miracle if the POE goes along. If your start date is in Aug, it's almost certain that they will turn you back and tell you to return in Aug when you are heading to work. Be prepared for this.

You had better be prepared to do a LOT of begging. The POE won't give a rat's ass about your moving dilemma, since, in their opinion, you shouldn't even be moving down in the first place.

Even going to the border when no one at your new firm can be reached is a bit chany at the best of times. Remember, the letter you arfe taking is between the company and the border. They are expected to be within reach.
