Getting TN and coming back

Hi,
When you get your TN status at the border can you come back in Canada? Do you need to get it again when you get back in the USA? What are the rules about coming back to visit your family in Canada for instance?

thanks.

Well I had never heard that you couldn't come right back after getting your TN. That's what I had done for my first one. I went to the tunnel in Windsor, got my TN came back into Canada packed and so forth and left a few days later.

That was years ago. I am now hearing (especially on the West Coast) of people being told that they need to start their job by the next day after being granted the TN. So it seems there's a chance you might encounter that now. I don't know how common it is, but people have been experiencing that so just something to keep in mind.

Visiting, just bring your TN and your passport if flying, or if driving your TN and whatever document you usually use to past through land ports (passports are still by far the easiest to use). So just bring your TN with you and you can go to Canada as much as you want to visit...

You can visit your family in Canada whenever. TN is a multiple entry status.

As the previous poster stated, just bring your TN with you when crossing the border. Typically, the canadian border officials will ask "what is your status abroad" when entering Canada to which you reply "TN". And when re-entering the US you state your Citizenship and state that you are "re-entering on an existing TN". That's all.

I guess to add to Warlords post, my last TN at the POE (I did it in July of 2006) the first border guard (when I drove up), and I believe the interviewing CBP officer, did ask me when I would be starting work (I applied for TN on a Thursday, was starting work the next monday). So they may ask.

Happy TNing

one more question...

so I can go to the border lets say saturday and come back in canada, pack up and pass again?

I just want to make sure the fact that I have to come back wont block me from getting the status.

thanks for all replies.

I think you are filtering what has been said.

Nowadays, almost all POES will be expecting you to be 'going directly to work' when they issue your TN.

If you are working in detroit, they mean TODAY, if you are driving to San Fran, they mean 3-4 days from now.

They will ask you this when you cross (don't be stupid and lie): "Are you going to work now". If you cannot truthfully say yes, they will say "come back on your way to work".

I know you will hear a lot of old stories (like mine) that you could get your TN 3-4 weeks before straing, go back and quit your job, go buy a house etc, but now you can't.

By and large the POEs only issue your TN on the entry in which you will start working.

Just trying to save you a trip.

Lets rephrase then

Im just trying to plan my move

the city I have an offer in is 15 hours of driving from my current location so...

If I start working on monday, then come back the next weekend to get my stuff, will there be any problem at the border getting back in?

what do you advise me to do ? take all my stuff straight when I move?

what is the purpose of this regulation? if you know...

You will have no problems on the re-entry when you bring your personal belonging to the US. The only key point in this whole TN granting issue that you have to watch is that you tell the border agent that you are reporting directly to work when you initially apply for the TN. They are issuing you a work visa, not a tourist visa, so it makes sense that you head directly to work after receiving the TN.

You will have no problem doing what you propose.

However, it sounded more like you were going to try to go to the border (with or without stuff) and do a 10 minute turnaround to get your things. they typically won't give you the TN if they know that is what you are doing.

But once you get your TN, you are free to cross the border ten times a day if you wish. The I-94 you get is implicitly multiple Entry, even if it is not stamped as such.

Just called them...

I just called the border(NY) Ill be getting it. The supervisor clearly told me there would be no problem for me to apply saturday and then come back sunday to get my stuff.

thanks again for all replies.

I don't understand what you mean by 'come back sunday'. Do you mean that you are going to stay in upstate NY overnight, just for the heck of it?!

That doesn't make sense.

If you do indeed get your TN on saturday (and you don't have it yet -- we'll see), you might as well just turn around and come back right then. Why wait 'til sunday??

sorry bad sentence

I meant, go saturday, get the TN, come back in canada on the saturday then go back sunday with my stuff and go work on monday.

sorry for the bad english.

Hope you get it, it seems like a wasted trip anyways, and I have known many a boder officer to say one thing on the phone and then do the opposite when you show up.

But I don't have a very high opinion of CBP

TN Hopes you are correct I called both Rainbow bridge and Peace Bridge, both office gave me same answer than I can go get my TN/TD and come back home right away and then book air tickets as my Employer is in Florida

I am gonna try anyway as can't book the non-refundable air ticket without TN

all I can say is YIKES!!

when I got my TN (fall 2004), I went to Nigara Falls POE, got my TN, returned back to Toronto, gave my 2 weeks notice, took 1 week vacation, then drove to Detroit Border Crossing, and flashed my TN, and that was it!!

I thought the "reporting straight to work" only applies in Airport POE (like Pearson) and that's why U need an air ticket to get past security blah's

It is not wise to go to airport, coz S#!TTY stuff happens (or the officer is having a bad day) and if you get declined, you pretty much end up with no employment
