Getting Started with I-130 for Parents

Hey there,

I'm a US Citizen, and I want to get both of my parents a permanent residence card. I know I need to file both a I-130 and a I-864 for each one of them. But I have some other questions...

Both of them have Tourist Visas and they travel to the US often, at least once a year. Will they still be able to travel if I file their I-130's?

If I-130's get approved, whats next? do I read that there is a in interview, (they are outside of the US) thus they will need to travel to the US but with what visa? tourist visa?

I also read that after its approved they are not yet residents and that I must file form I-485 to change their status to permanent residents, because I-130 only grants them permission to apply for a visa, is this true?

Also, how long does is take on average for them to be able to become residents?

Once I-130 is filed, they will have trouble entering US on a visitor visa since visitor visa requires no immigrant intent.

Once I-130 is approved and paperwork is accepted, they will be interviewed at a US consular mission in their country, not in the US.

It takes 6-8 months from the time I-130 is filed to getting interviewed. After interview they are issued immigrant visas valid for 6 months from date of interview.

What is the purpose of the 6 month immigrant visa? Is it supposed to allow enough time to be in the country while the interview process takes place?

The immigrant visa allows then to travel to US as permanent residents once their green card is approved. Interview is held in their country, not in the US.

But why only 6 months? I thought the green card serves as a visa.
The visa stamped on their passports are only for their first entry into the country. After their interview is successful the new immigrants have 6 months to make their trip to US. Once they arrive and are processed by immigration, they will receive their green card by mail in the US in a few weeks of arrival. Green cards are not produced before immigrants arrival to the US.
