I am currently working on my OPT and planning to get married in the next couple of months to a H-1B visa holder. I am not planning on applying for the H-4 till my OPT gets over. Does getting married change my OPT status in any way or do i have to inform USCIS that I am no longer single as was listed on my original application when i applied for the OPT??

Thanks.

no, getting married has nothing to do with your current non-immigrant status, and you do not need to notify USCIS. It, however, gives you eligibility to change your status in the future, which apparently you are aware of.

If I were you, I'd apply for a change of status at least a month to two months before your OPT expires.

Thanks for your reply. If I apply 2 months prior to my OPT expiring, doesn't that affect my work eligibility as I may be considered to be going on a H4? I do have 2 month grace period after my OPT. I am not sure about this but I've heard that when applying for a H-4 you can specify the date when you want to switch to a H-4. Any thoughts on this??

when you apply for a change of status, you remain in your original status until it runs out, and then until the application for a change of status is adjudicated, you are in "change of status pending" status.

So, you will be in F-1 status until your OPT runs out.

I don't know if you can specify a particular date to start your H4 status.
