Getting married after consular visa approval

I have a friend who is in a situation where i could not answer his question. May be some one here will be able to answer this. His mother petitioned for him when he was unmarried under 21, he's 32 now. He received notification from NVC and US embassy for further processing last year just when he gave up and decided to get married. So he decided to wait and postpone his wedding further. He got his approval in January and has 6 months to enter US. Now his girlfriend waited long enough and her parent's are running out of patience. The GFs parents doesn't want him to leave before he ties the knot. And he is worried they will not wait for him if he leaves before getting married.

Here's the question:
Will there be any issue if he gets married before traveling to US?
Or should he travel to US, go back after he gets his green card on hand and get married. This will cost him quite a bit for traveling.

I appreciate your input.

I have a friend who was in a similar situation. She said they don't check overseas to see if one is married. Can anyone confirm this?

If the marriage is public record in the given country, like they are in the US, the consulate might find out.

But if they don't find out at that stage, they'll probably find out later, especially if one spouse tries to sponsor the other.

The effect of his marriage depends on the particulars of his situation. It might screw things up entirely, or his wife may even be able to join him.

Is he from the Philippines or Mexico? Is his mother a US citizen?

his mother is Green Card holder and she never stays long enough in the US to qualify for citizenship. he is from Banlgadesh. he's not concerned about bringing his wife with him. he plans to sponsor her after getting his green card. He's trying to avoid an extra trip within a month after coming to the US. Anything longer than a month may piss off his GF's parents. He's concerned about being broke for a while. Wedding and two trips, you get the picture.

If he marries before obtaining LPR status in the U.S., he cannot immigrate on that visa for an unmarried son over 21 of an LPR.

Google for the story of Pedro and Salvacion SERVANO and how doing that screwed up their lives decades later.....

If his mother had citizenship, he would be in the 3rd preference category and his wife could join him as a derivative.

But because his mother only has a green card, his marriage before entering the US with the visa would nullify the petition his mother filed for him, and his visa.

i just read the story. their case is different. She got married before even applying for immigrant visa. His case would be after the immigrant visa approval but before traveling to US/without having his green card on hand.

I think the safest thing would be to wait til he get's his green card. Is there any wait period after he get's his card and be able to get married?

No. He can get married the day after he enters the US with the immigrant visa, without jeopardizing his green card or his ability to sponsor his (future) wife.

Are he and his fiancee's family aware that there will be an estimated 3-4 years wait for her to immigrate?
