Hi Y'all,
do you all know if someone with GC can work for a US company overseas without losing GC, will he be subject to 6 months law? as far as i know you can't be outside the US for more than 6 moths.
thanks

i believe if u are out of the country more than 6 months, u will be in trouble
but i heard u can hire a lawyer to get your GC back if it is your first time.

one of my friend stayed in china for more than 2 years, he goes back to US through canada (land), did not have problems. but i am not sure when this thing happened, maybe b4 911

travel document

Just get a travel document (advanced permission to return to the US). The only problem you will have is related to the longevity of your stay outside the US for the sake of naturalization (if you spend more than a year outside the US, it will break the continuity of your presence in the US)

I know of several people who travel overseas on regular basis and stay for 1 to 2 years at the time with no problem. Call the customer service number to double check on this.

I remember reading some procedure about doing this. There are certain forms and regestritions, etc.

Good luck on your research on this.

Thanks Timz and everyone else.
Hi everyone,
I discovered that i can file a N-470 which asks for residence to be preserved toward naturalization despite the fact that I am outside the U.S.
on the other hand, to qualify for that, my employer has te be listed in the American institutions of research recognized by the Attorney General that may be found at 8 CFR section 316.20(a). My question is:
Since my employer is not listed in the list, how do i go by adding it ? i googled the subject and found out there were cases where institutions were added. and FYI, my employer should qualify since it's a state university.

i appreciate your time and thanks in advance.

You are liable to lose your green card if the DHS concludes that you have abandoned your home in the United States. Unlike American citizens, you cannot just pack up and then come back at any point thereafter.

If you are going to be absent for a sustained period of time, the first thing you should do is to obtain a reentry permit. You need to maintain your American bank accounts, timely pay federal and income state taxes. If you own your own home, selling that is not advisable.

And you need to come back for visits frequently (like every 9 or 10 months).

Before you can use that legal provision, I think you need to have been a green card holder for one year.

Thanks Gilbert, My GC is backdated 1 year so i think i will be fine on that side. What about PR working overseas for American institutions of research recognized by the Attorney General, they will be covered right? as for my employer, I am trying with international department to see if they can add the university to the List.

thanks again

Hello everyone,
Does anyone know if an asylee can take the memo from Willam Yates to SS dept and ask them to give you an unrestricted SS card? Since that memo talks about asylees/refugees don't need to have an EAD?
Thanks
