GC Renewal, N-400 and Name Check

Hi all,

I recently renewed my GC in February 2006 (because I had an old version of the card and it was expiring in 2008) and the whole process took about 4 weeks, in essence it was done in an appropriate timeline (i.e. no delays). Now my GC is valid until 2016.

I am applying for citizenship tomorrow and I was wondering whether the fact that I renewed my GC in due time implies that there is no issue with my name whatsoever and that I should not expect any sort of delay with the name check process during the N-400.

Please advise!

Thank you all.

I'm guessing it's one of those mysteries of life.

I'd be willing to bet a quarter that your GC processing and your Natz processing have no relationship to each other. The GC renewal processing is pretty much to check that you are still actually a resident and to get old green cards out of circulation (until about 10 or 12 years ago, Green Cards had no expiration date).

Naturalization is a different process. They need to check you for the constitutional and statutory requirements, one of which is "good moral character". That's what the fingerprints and name check are for (as well as asking about arrests, citations, mental institutions...)

I see your point and to an extent this is a realistic way of looking at it.

Logically and optimistically speaking, I feel that the USCIS would not want to renew my GC for another 10 years if I had a criminal background whatsoever and with new regulations in place that would include any sort of red flags associated with my name.

I send my N-400 tomorrow and I suppose time will tell.

I send my application in today. Do you think I should initiate an FOIPA request at the same time so as to attempt to expedie the name check process or should I wait?

dont do any FOIPA. If you get stuck in name ccheck then do it

Green card renew doesn't trigger name check at all...N400 does!

Are you sure? I read somewhere that namecheck is done before any immigration benefit is granted.

I read somewhere that so far I-90 forms undergo just FBI finger print and IBIS checks

Do you know where you read that? Are IBIS checks very basic? As in, what is required for N-400 very different then GC renewal?

Do you know where again? It would be great if you could direct me out of curiousity.

It was in the USCIS "letter" describing the details of the Namecheck process. I recall its posted somewhere in this forum, probably about 2 months back.

If you come across it again, let me know for sure, otherwise I will just have to wait and see.
