GC problem- H1 to F1

From the face of it, it looks like there is some problem in my GC processing. I have 2.5 years remaining on my H1. My wife has 4.5 years on her H1. Is it possible for me to transfer from H1 to F1/H4 or some other visa after 2.5 years (when my h1 expires). What visa can I get so that I continue my stay in US ?

H4 years are also added to the 6 year limit. SO if at all you wnat to be in different status you can get a F1. You have to get an admission , get I20 and file for change of status, which again is a lengthy process.
If GC is going to be delayed and it has been more than a year since Labor or I140 was applied, you can extend your H1 1 year at a time after 6 years. See AC 21 provisions in www.isn.org
