GC holder out of US one year

I am a naturilized citizen. My husband a green card holder has been out of the country one year working in Japan. Would he face difficulties returning?
 
Without advance parole, yes. I believe it is one year though. AP is not issued if return is planned within 365 days. However, when I had my interview the immigration officer said that you must have a good excuse for staying out of the country over 180 days. I would consult an immigration attorney as technically your husband could lose his GC.
