This may not relate for the topics in here, but would like to try to get some answers. I currently have a job offer in Europe and would like to work in Europe for a couple of years.

1. How long do I need to stay in US per year to remain the GC holder status?
2. If I started to work in Europe, do I still need to pay US taxes? or pay taxes based on the country I work?

Any info will be greatly appreciated!

Normally atleast 6 months you have to be in the country to maintain GC status. But if you fill some forms(iam not sure which form it is), you can be out of the country for more time upto 2 years. This is what I heard from one of my friend who was planning to go out of the country for a longer period. It is better to consult an attorney.

As long as you don't have any income from US sources, on what you would pay taxes ? May be if u have a own house, you might have to pay the property taxes, otherthan that I don't think u need to pay any taxes.

So long as you are a permanent resident or a US citizen, you need to file a 1040 (not a 1040NR). If you stop filing US taxes, that's considered abandonment of US permanent residence. Bye bye GC.

I definitely second this!!!

there is no requirement for filing on tax if you have no income. I know of this since my inlaws are gc holders and they live in india and keep coming to the US ever so often.

If you want to work outside the country u have to file for an extension with the BCIS and they will send u a letter of approval for the same and u can stay outside the country without a problem.

I think the max is 2 years

You can stay outside US continuously for 2 years, if you apply for the re-entry permit (form I-131). Without filing this form, your stay of atleast 6 months is required in US to maintain the permanent resident status.

However, it will affect your residency requirements for becoming a citizen.

Your guys are awesome!

Your guys are awesome!

Thank you very much for the info. I am sorry but I have another question. Say if my job out of US is actually a branch/office of the same company that I work within the US, then what about the tax?

I am currently still waiting for I-485 to get approved, if I decide to take the job, does it mean all the time I spent in getting the GC become useless? :( :( :(
