GC holder - any unemployment benefits?

I was wondering if a Green Card holder can use unemployment benefits between jobs especially in this US economy?

Anybody has an insight?

Thanks!

Unemployment benefits are not linked to your immigration status. Both you and your previous employer have paid a little every paycheck for it, and if you have been laid off, you can claim your unemployment benefits.

Actually, they are. One of the conditions of UI is that you be able to work, ie. have employment authorization. It's why non-immigrants generally cannot collect unless they have an EAD.

But for a GC holder, this is not an issue.

You're right, but I took that for granted.
If you don't have an EAD or a work visa or Green Card, you can't work, therefore you wouldn't be paying for unemployment benefits on your paystubs.
But I see your point in pointing this out.

Not all unemployed workers qualify for unemployment benefits. Each state has eligibility requirements having to do with the number of hours worked in a given period before becoming unemployed, etc. Check with your state unemployment office.

Even people who do not qualify for payments may make use of the services of that office. In my state, having a referral from that office for a job posted through the state employment agency is beneficial in getting a review of your application. They also help with resumes and job fairs. Take advantage of the services they provide.

Thank you, all! I'll be checking with our office to see if I'm eligible in my state.
