hi,

I have a GC and will be eligible for applying for citizenship in a month.
I am planning of getting married to someone who is in US on a non-immigrant visa. Will getting our marriage registered at this stage have affect on my citizenship application ?

If it will delay the citizenship process should i register the marriage later and
go ahead with filing for citizenship as single and wait till i get my citizenship and
then register the marriage .

I would appreciate your comments on the pros/cons.

regards

i am not a 100% sure....but as far as I know - you shouldnt get your marriage registered until u r a citizen. U should go ahead and get married according to your religious faith rituals......everything except for the actual registration.

the reason why this makes sense to me is coz that way your spouse can relatively easily get to be legal in the country.

thanks for ur reply samira
my fiance is already on legal non-immigrnt visa so being on legal status doesnt seem to be as issue to me. the only concern seems to be will getting married now .. before filing my citizenship will affect/delay the process of my citizenship??
could you plz clarify this a bit.

anyone else also .. plz advise!

The two things are not related.
First of all, what visa does your fiance have?
If it's a H or L visa, then you're definitely ok.

he is on F1 . guess that should also be ok. what do u say?

What I say counts nothing.
There are many people that adjust status from F1.
If he's been in the US for many years and met you under F1, then there should be no problem because his intent was not to immigrate when he got in the US.
If he came few months ago and now he's getting married to a USC, that might raise concerns, but if he proves that his intent was not to immigrate when he got his F1, then there's no problem.

Btw, tell him not to leave the country while AOS is pending, or even before.
