GC Expired what is status.

Hi Friends,
GC Expired a year back for one of my friend. He forgot about it. He applied for Citizenship recently and realized that his GC had expired. What is his status now and what is he supposed to do in these circumstances?

Secondly he took an employment offer and when I asked him how he managed he said that on I-9 the requirement says either GC or Driving Licence and SS Card will do. I had a look at the form and was really surprised that it was true. Thus if anyone is out of status too he can just provide DL and SS and get a job!!!!

Thank you JoeF. But if that is the case why the need to renew your GC? Anything with expiry date will not work after that date like Driving Licence, Passport Etc. then why is this different.

Contrary to what JoeF says, a PR who is married to a US citizen initially receives a conditional GC that WILL expire after 2 years, if not renewed. Such PR status will also expire if such a GC is not renewed. You need to find out what your friend carries.

card expires not status

The card expires on the expiration date not the status. I read on the INS site somewhere, the card expiration is because the Government keep changing the design of the card for security purposes. Guess they just come out with arbitrary figure of 10 years.

Just to make sure most of the ppl are using the latest design card for security reasons.

GC card validity matters only when you travel overseas.. where you have to swipe the card at immigration.
