You heard wrong. So long as it's merely a visit and you maintain US residence, you are fine.

You must be thinking of cases where people leave the US shortly after getting the GC, then stay away for a number of months. When they apply for citizenship, the officer may determine that they didn't begin continuous US residence until after they returned from the long trip.I just got my Green card. Planning to go to my home country for vacation now.

A typical vacation of 1 to 4 weeks should not cause any such trouble. And even if the trip is longer than that, the only real trouble is delaying naturalization eligibility for a bit (unless the trip is VERY long to the extent that it even jeopardizes the green card).
