GC and back dating

Hello everyone,

Does anyone know the logic USCIS uses to back date GC? I am sorry if this was answered before. I was just curious since some people's GCs were back dated. Do they do that for everybody? Or do they just do it for people who have been waiting a long time to get their 485s approved?

Thanks in advance :)

MGTgrl,
They do that for all asylees. The reason the GC is backdated one year is because of the one year you have to wait to apply for permanent resident after asylum granted.

Thanks again for the info! That's good news. At least we know we have to wait less than 5 years!

Yes it is good. Actually, you can apply for citizenship after 3 years and 9 months you have given permanent residence. Or 4 years and 9 months after the date on your GC.

This is confusing. For example, If I get my residence today (yeah right  ) I can apply for citizenship in 3 years and 9 months from now (March-02-2006) or 4 years and 9 months from the GC date (March-02-2005). So, I could apply for citizenship on Dec-02-2009.
