GC after asylum question

Hello everyone,

Hope I wouldn't get flamed for asking this, I tried to look for an answer, but didn't find any.
Is there a difference how you're treated (immigrationwise) with GC you received as a result of asylee status or for example if you get it as an exceptional researcher?
I know that with GC you can be temporary out of US up to a year and then return without any extra documents needed except your GC. Does the same apply if you have GC as a result of an asylum? Or you still need to have a refugee travel document (application I-131) to come back even you're out for less than a year?
If you have GC and want to be out for more than a year you need a reentry permit. If you get GC as an asylee you can get either reentry permit or refugee travel document, is it right?

Thank you :)

Al_ba,

PER USCIS you shouldn't be treated differently once you get your GC. But thats not the case. As you know that if you are a refugee/asylee, you are not supposed to go back to your persecution country or renew your national passport. Even though you become a PR through Asylum, USCIS has enabled you to obtain a RTD beacuse they think you assume you can't obtain one from your persecuted embassy.

As an PR based on asylee/refugee, you can either get a RTD or a Rentry permit to travel.

Yes asylees will always be treated less until they become U.S Citizens.

Okay, thank you for your reply.
Some things are clear to me but some are still not.
Let's say I still have a valid passport from my homecountry, and I received a GC through asylum process. What if I want to go somewhere, can I still use my passport or I definately have to obtain a refugee travel document for that per US immigration regulations?
Just to clarify:reentry permit is not for traveling, it's to be able to return to the US if you leave for more than a year, correct me if I am wrong???
Refugee travel document is for traveling, but it's only given for a year, so if I am correct that GC after asylum holders can return to the US within a year without any other documets, like GC after H1 for that matter, it cannot serve for returning after a year of absence? So it's only for traveling if you don't have a passport.

Would appreciate any comments on these. :)

Rentry permit is used for travelling. It is the same document as RTD but it has "Rentry permit" written inside the page..the look and feel(green color) and it looks like a passport...Its used ONLY for Green Card Holders..No matter how they got their Green cards. It is valid for 2 years. Embassy's can put visa in this document...there are visa pages.

Refugee Travel Document is the same document as above..green color but with Refugee Travel Document written inside. It is valid for 1 year. ONLY and ONLY refugees/or ASYLEES can apply for this document and NO one else.

If you have a passport and still valid and you have a GC. You sure can travel anywhere you want however there is no right answer for this if you can or not. You never know if during your citizenship, the USCIS will ask why did you use your NP when you had said you have not when you applied for RTD.

I have known ppl who have used their NP and GC to travel and gotten to become citizens..but that was before 9/11..so I do not and cannot tell you what to do.

I hope its clear. DO not be scared of asking any question..NO one will flame you or ridicule you. Ask anything you want..its fair!
