FULL TIME to FREELANCE on TN VISA

I am currently on the graphic design TN and due to the economy, my employer has asked me if I would consider freelancing through them instead. Would this be a problem?

Also, if this were to happen, I am considering freelancing for another company and eventually switching companies. (would I just get another TN through them?).

I've read on some other forums that as long as you are not writing your own TN letter (self-employed). 1099 are acceptable versus W2s.

Your advice is greatly appreciated!

The better term is contracting. This is permitted on TN, as long as you get a TN for each client. If you show up at the border with 1 TN and ask for another for a second client, then at least the border officer will see that you are aware of the need to have separate TNs.

Thanks so much for the clarification. My situation has changed a bit: I got an offer for a new full time salary position at another company. I also have another offer for contracting at a separate company.

Essentially, I will be holding 3 tn visas (one for my current, one for the new full-time, one for the contracting). Will it be a problem for me to apply for the full-time tn visa and contracting visa at the same time when I cross at the POE?

Also, I already have the full-time letter in order, however, for the contracting, how do I state my pay? my hourly rate?

Thank you so much for your help!

3 tns won't be a problem. Your sponsor can list the pay whichever way they wish. They write the letter, not you.
