From J1 to B2 Visa

From J1 to B2 Visa, Possible??

Hello,

I am currently in the USA with a J1 Internship Visa ending in June 2010.
I would like to spend some time traveling around the USA for at least 6months.
I went on the USCIS website. Should I apply for a B2 visa with the application named: "I-539,Application To Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status" ? Or should I fill up some other application forms?

Or am I totally wrong and I should do something different? I am totally lost :(

I would appreciate any help, advice, link.
By the way, I am from France.
