One of my friends' I-485 approved on May 24, 2004:

RD/ND: March 28, 2002
FP: March, 2003
No RFE

The email alert (update) from USCIS first, then approval notice by mail.

Did your friend or lawyer get the approval letter (By Postal Mail)

In addition, you can choose to receive automatic case status updates, which will be sent via email.
Create/Edit customer portfolio account
Create/Edit representative portfolio account
Login to an existing account.

You should create a portfolio account there to get the email alerts.
They (atterney and friend) both got the approval notices by mail (friend got courtesy copy of it)
