nope...how would that give me 5 rows of 4 each.

a T or cross is just two rows.
We need five distinct rows. Understandably, there wil be apples from one row on the others.

Your Row 1,2,3, is the same row and the same goes for row 4,5

Arrange them in a star with an apple at each of the 5 tips and an apple at each of the 5 intersections.
