I got the following message today

"On October 6, 2004, the results of your fingerprint review for your I485
Application to Register Permanent Residence or to Adjust Status were received,
and processing has resumed on your case. We will mail you a notice if further
action is needed, or when a decision is made."

Now does anybody has any information as how this works? When I called the FBI they told me that they sent the FP the same day they received them (sep 25th 2004). I suspect that this status is updated not automatically but triggered by an officer working on your case or something similar, anybody has any insights on this?

What triggers the on line status to be updated?

Don't read much into this. FBI is very efficient, but USCIS is not, so the information entry can happen 1-2 weeks after the FBI clearance is obtained.

there is a backlog of everything in USCIS, even when you do a change of address it takes few weeks to be in force.
When FBI send FP review, it goes in to an FP review queue at USCIS which is also backlogged, so it takes maybe a week or two to be updated in the system.
I bet there is no backlog for them in clearing the checks that we send them, or no backlog for them in getting they pay checks.
