Folks,

What form is needed for kids to apply for citizenship? Do kids have to apply for citizenshipw with parents if they are under 18? Thanks in advance for youe response.

thanks Bobsmyth . So, no form is needed for kids? Can you share more info. Thanks again.

Yes. no form is needed for kids. Once you and your spouse become US citizens by taking the oath, your kids will become US citizens automatically (if they are under 18.). You can take them to the post office to apply for passports along with certificate, birth certificates of your kids, and their ids or foreign passports.

If you need certificate of citizenship for kids, use N-600. It is optional, but recommended because it can be used as a back up if your kids' passports are stolen or missing.

thank you so much for your response. How about in case only one parent apply for the citizenship, e.g. only father or mother? Is child going to automatically become citizen too?

If I fill N600, I have to pay $430 fee. If I don't file and apply after oath, what is the fee then? Also, waht doc do I need to file with N600?

You can only apply for N600 after you take the oath and the child has derived citizenship. If you applied before that you would just waste $430. For N600 you at least need to send a photocopy of your naturalization certificate, photocopy of child Green Card and little else. Some people send copies of school records to show presence of the child in the US. You can take a look at the N600 instructions yourself. Most of the documents are already in possession of the USCIS because of the Green Card process so you don't need to resubmit those. Obviously the cost is still $430, as you can only apply when the child has become a citizen after you take the oath.

Does your child have a Green Card? Is the child living in the US with you?
