Folks with Middle Name - please read and respond. Appreciate it.

In the Green card, at the top where name is mentioned it is displayed in the format:
<LastName>, <FirstName> <Mid.Initial>

Only the Mid.Initial is mentioned at the top of green card.

At the bottom of the green card (Front face but at the bottom) it says
Last Name<<FirstName<Middle Name fully

Now in the N-400, they ask you to write the Name as it EXACTLY appears on your green card. Which format do we use (The middle initial or full middle name?)

Please clarify. Thanks a ton.

I had the same thing happen to me.

On the application there are two parts. In the beginning you write your complete name: Doe, John, David for instance.

On the second part (also on page 1) I wrote the name exactly as it was on the top of my PR card: Doe, John, D.

The FBI background and name check will go through every possible combination of you first last and middle names including possible initials.

Hope this helps.

BTW -
1. Are you folks experiencing website down or slow issues? with this forum.

2. Jedi, Yes, but at the bottom of your Green Card on the front, they will say
Doe<<John<David

This means the Green Card system has your full name recorded and the top display shows your abbreviated Middle Initial "D".
But in the question where they ask you to write your name EXACTLY as it appears on the Green card, the field for Middle name says "full middle name" and not initial like Takshila says above.

I therefore consider writing my full middle name. Hopefully the USCIS can figure these things out no matter how we write it.:)

PS: I am a nitpicker for details...so if I bug some of you I apologize...I tend to read all these small stuff too much! :-)

We're all picky.

Ok.

FIRST PAGE OF N400
Part A (requests name in its entirety): Full Last, Full First,Full Middle

Part B (I used the name on top as my definition of "exactly"): Full Last, Full First, Middle Initial

This is also how my license appears as well.

Besides, they will have a copy of your card and an entire original of your complete immigration file. You can't make a mistake UNLESS you mispell something.

There no need to apologize for being a responsible adult.

You can't mess up the first page unless your name is VERY different from record to record.

Talking abt names...one other question...
what if I usually write my First Name as the first few letters (shortened) in most forms like Utilities, Apartment rental etc. I shorten it to a few letters to keep it from being difficult to pronounce.

I plan to write this "shortened first name" in my OTHER NAMES used space on the N-400.
(Last name is always the same for me in all documents).

Is this ok?

(My "official official" docs like Passport, Greencard, Drivers License, Birth Certificate all have the FULL FIRST NAME). I just use the short name for things like Telephone bill, apartment rental, day-to-day stuff.

Part A: Full Last Name, Full First Name, Full Middle Name
Part B: Full Last Name, Full First Name, Middle Initial

Part C(if you have ever used other names provide below): Here you write other names you've used.

I mentioned my middle name where they explicitly asked for it and it was there on my naturalisation certificate when I received it. As a result, it appears under "Given names" on my passport. Just the way I wanted it.
