Hi All,
Three weeks back I had applied for FIOPA and yday I recvd a letter from the FBI. I fail to understand what it actually means. Can anyone give me an idea regarding this.
The letter ran thus,

"Dear Requestor,

This is in response to your Freedom of Information-Privacy Acts (FOIPA) request noted above.
To promptly respond to requests, we concentrate on identifying main files in the central records system at FBI Headquaters. no records responsive to your FOIPA request were located by a search of the automated indices.
You may file an administrative appeal by writing to the director, Office of Information and Privacy Untited States Department of Justice, 1425 New York Ave, NW, Suite 11050, Washington, DC. 20530-0001, within sixty days from the date of this letter. The envelope and the letter should be clearly marked "Freedom of Information Appeal" or Information Appeal". Please cite the Foipa number assigned to your request so that it may be easily identified.
Attached is a copy of the FBI Fact file sheet."

Any comments will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

This is the standard response. The line "no records responsive to your FOIPA request were located by a search of the automated indices" is the key one - it means you don't have a criminal record.

As per the FBI's web site, FOIPA results are different from Name check because for FOIPA, they check only the main files (where one may be directly named as the suspect etc.) and they use the exact spelling of your name that you provided. For name check, they use main files and reference files (where you may have been listed as say a witness to a crime etc.) and they use phonetic variations of your name as well.
