first questions on NIW

Dear All,

I'm so glad to find this forum and community! I'm just about to start to prepare my 140-NIW self-petition. My first question is if I need to specifically address that I match at least 3 of the following criteria for EB2 in my petition letter besides the 3 NYDOT prongs. Regarding item #5 (membership), do those pay-to-become-a-member types count? I don't have any membership now, so do I need to join one if it counts?

1. An official academic record showing the alien has a degree, diploma, certificate or similar award from a college, university, school or other institution of learning relating to the area of exceptional ability;
2. Letters documenting at least ten years of full-time experience in the occupation being sought;
3. A license to practice the profession or certification for a particular profession or occupation;
4. Evidence that the alien has commanded a salary or other remuneration for services which demonstrates exceptional ability;
5. Membership in professional associations;
6. Recognition for achievements and significant contributions to the industry or field by peers, government entities, professional or business organizations.

My second question is regarding research area. I'm in computational materials science and have worked on some glass materials. In arguing the substantial intrinsic merit of my research area, should I focus on the big or small one?

Thanks a lot for your time in answering my questions!

No! paid memberships don't count!

May i ask you what do you mean by big or small?

Thank you so much for your reply, eb1doc!

By "big", I mean "computational materials science". It's really a pretty general and big area.

By "small", I mean "in the area of certain glass materials" and if even smaller, "interaction of glass and laser" ...

Thanks again!

I think you should focus on the big picture and not specifics since it will confuse the heck out of the unfortunate soul that has to read your petition (remember he or she is no scientist let alone being an expert in your field). Lead onto science from the abstract of your papers/ posters/presentations ect. no more.
