First entry into USA after obtaining visa

Hi.
I won the 2009 lottery and have recently received my immigrant visa.
I was wondering if it is possible to enter the USA with the visa a first time for a short period (few weeks), then come back to my home country for some months to take care of some business here, and then go back to the USA permanently ?
Is there any risk or problems in doing that ?
Thanks.

I think you meant DV 2010. Anyways, there is no problem. Make sure you have your GC and SS card and then you may leave. But if you plan to be out for close to a year or so ... you will be better off getting a travel authorization so you could enter. I think it is form I-131.

do you need to wait for the GC and SSN? Cant these me sent to you once they arrive at the address specified? If you apply for REP, what reason should you give if you are returning to finish up business in home country?

isnt the stamp in your passport at POE valid for travel and substitutes for GC until you receive it? what are the implications if you travel out and return in 6 months after first visit to begin GC process.

I'll second currycrab's questions : I plan to make a first trip to the USA and stay for 2 to 3 weeks, and then return to Europe and come back to the USA later (within 6 months probably). I've read that the GC takes 5 weeks or more to arrive to the US address that I specified, so I will be out of the country when it arrives (somebody will be there to receive the mail though). Is that a problem ?

Maybe you will receive it sooner. My friend got hers in 12 days:)....Careful with sending it by mail...you don't want it to get lost in the mail.

or maybe you(r friend) received it sooner b/c of AOS?

I also plan to activate and then return and prepare for the move (since I move with my family, I might also go first myself depending on many things).

I am sure you can use the passport stamp to travel, I just do not know when you activate and return you need to ask REP (and where do you ask that)?
Its better to have a REP even though you don't need it, then to travel and return without it and they give you the third degree. Could someone who knows and has done this answer please?

What is the process for REP and how do you use it (what info do you give and so on).
