had my fingerprints done on 2/13 (baltimore). Today I called the FBI number to check on the status. The automatic response said they won't provide info about the background check just on the fingerprint check. Then I got to talk to a person who said the fingerprint check results were sent back on 2/13 (which is the same day as they were taken).
What does that mean? Also, does it mean the background check is still ongoing?
anyways i know I am ways away but won't hurt to ask.
 
This means that your fingerprints have been processed and returned to the USCIS, completing the FP part of the background check process. The only way to find out whether or not your name check has been cleared is to schedule an InfoPass appointment. I'd give it about 6-8 weeks from the date of FP appointment to schedule an InfoPass, although you are free to schedule one any time you want.

no infopass at this time. i just wasn't aware the fingerprints and background check are two separate things.

No problem! As you can see from my timeline, I waited about 7 weeks before doing an InfoPass. The background check has been completed, and I am currently in queue for interview. I suggest you do the same in a few weeks, just to get some peace of mind.
